Hot on the heels of her debut concert album, Amy Grant In Concert, Amy Grant In Concert, Volume 2 was a minor surprise. Minor in the sense that though it follows the same tour and has the same artist, there is a sense that this album is a noticeable departure of sorts from the first. It’s not night-and-day different, but it does beg comparisons with the first that sets it apart stylistically.
If a side-by-side comparison were to be made about the two early concert albums, one would presume the second came after a significantly longer delay than in actuality. Volume 2 feels more like a truer concert album, offering longer tracks with more ambitious arrangements that adds incentive to the fan to buy the album in hopes of gaining a different experience than the studio albums.
An early success in Amy’s career is the inspirational ‘I’m Gonna Fly’, which can only be found on this concert album (the exception being the inclusion of an excerpt in the compilation song, ‘Ageless Medley’ on her The Collection album). Like ’The Impossible Dream’ or ’My Way’, but less hokey, ‘I’m Gonna Fly’ encourages the ambitious pursuit of one’s destiny.
The standout track is ‘Too Late’ which seems so out of place with its hard rock riffing and screaming guitar solos. But it proves that Amy has some versatility up her sleeve which she will reveal in time.
The overall feel of the album is a bit more sophisticated and upbeat in comparison to her first concert outing and most fans would probably express a preference for the second. However, the album is dated and only a real Amy Grant fan would likely appreciate this or any other early recording.
And again, hearing Amy express her ideas in words while interacting with the audience is a revelation into the simplicity and relevance of her faith that appeals to such a wide base of Christians looking for a model of a person of faith who is at ease in the modern world.
