Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) Magazine called Lead Me On the number one Christian album of all time. And it’s no wonder. The album fused the worlds of pop, rock, folk and country into a tightly produced gem of timeless tracks that would cross over into several genre markets.
Lead Me On was also unique in that it appeared on the scene as the CD format was just beginning to ramp up and attract new music fans. Because CD’s at the time were more expensive than their vinyl and cassette tape counterparts, additional tracks that were unavailable otherwise were given as a bonus to help spur sales. Think ‘DVD bonus features’ for music and you’ll have an idea what labels had in mind to move the new format. ‘If You Have To Go Away’, a danceable country/pop song and the sonically experimental ‘Wait For The Healing’, a compelling examination of end times, were the two exclusive songs you were treated to getting if you spent the extra money.
A refreshing departure from market considerations, the vast majority of these tracks are extended for extra long play and plenty of room for musical exploration. Artistic integrity, at the behest of record company executives and their desire to squeeze tracks into brief, radio-friendly soundbites, rules on this album as evidenced by its generous length.
Critically acclaimed, musically unequaled and lyrically honest, this is not only Amy Grant’s greatest achievement as an artist but a true milestone in the history of contemporary Christian music.
