My Father's Eyes (1979) My Father's Eyes album cover

Amy Grant’s sophomore album was released in 1979 with a more mature sound. The title track, My Father’s Eyes, was written by a budding young songwriter named Gary Chapman. The sensitivity of the lyrics made a deep impression on Amy and soon thereafter, the song collaborators wound up falling in love and later would marry.

The album for the most part is quite mellow in keeping with the predominant styling of adult contemporary music at the end of the seventies. Notable exceptions include You Were There with its feather-light disco/pop feel, Giggle, another novelty tune that earnestly tries to convey its well-intentioned message of living by godly principles in spite of the ridicule of others with its awkward melody and the all-too-short, infectious a capella song Keep It On Going.

Besides the memorable milestone title track, these individual songs with their brief lengths were hardly ground-breaking. But they proved that a young, new songwriter was beginning to emerge as a serious artist who would only improve with time and become a major force in contemporary Christian music.
