Released in 1985, Unguarded would prove to be Amy Grant’s most ambitious project to that point in her career. The sound was more polished with highly danceable tracks and stylized vocal effects that would go on to challenge the sensibilities of many of the fans of her previous albums. Add to that the infamous leopard skin jacket cover which became a point of controversy among conservative evangelicals.
For young Christians, Unguarded gave license to kids to love Jesus and have a good time without compromising either. As a young Christian, this would stretch me. The spiritual journey of each individual believer runs into obstacles where previous preconceptions are tested and values are scrutinized. And as progressive as this album was in terms of style, the core message remained true to God and his grace. It marked one of many turning points in my spiritual life.
Tracks like Love of Another Kind, Fight and The Prodigal (I’ll Be Waiting) remain all-time favorites as they bring back memories of my teenage years as well as stand the test of time to reveal themselves as musical masterpieces.
